Have you ever been curious about harvesting olives? Then you must visit Greece in late autumn and experience how different daily life can be on an inspiring island such as Kythira. There are hardly any tourists, you are alone with the Greeks and the island is unspoilt. During the day, you will be very active, immersed in nature, harvesting olives or walking. Late in the afternoon at home, after a warm and refreshing shower, you will recover from another energetic day, with the heating turned on, a glass of ouzo, the candles burning and a good book. Since 2003 we have lived on the island of Kythira in the village of Potamos. In 2009 we bought the ruined house next door, our dream was to transform this beautiful ruin into a unique and spacious holiday home. After 50 years in ruins Pyrgos House finally re-opened its doors in summer 2010.
Pyrgos is Greek for tower. Within living memory, inhabitants of Potamos know the traditional village house as Pyrgos because of its height and aristocratic look. Now, fully restored, we have returned the house to its former glory. The location, the views, the original outside staircase with surprising lines, and the beautiful arches make Pyrgos House a unique and striking house which has already been photographed many times.
The house is located in a narrow and quiet alley in the friendly and historic residential of Panaretianika. From the balcony on the front the view over the green hills in the direction of Logothetianika is stunning.
With a stay in Potamos you will submerge yourselves in Greek village life. Around the village square there is a bakery, a butcher shop, a small super market and some nice kafeneia and restaurants.
Every Sunday morning locals and visitors come together at the market on the village square. It is a traditional and colourful market where islanders sell their local products and have done so for hundreds of years. A visit to this market cannot be missed during your stay on Kythira.
Potamos is an ideal base for discovering the island due to its central location.

A beautiful, stone outside staircase leads you to a small, intimate balcony and the first floor entrance directly into the living area. Here you enter the high, spacious and light living-room with comfortable seating and a big dining-table. Adjacent is the kitchen and a separate bed-room with two single beds. From the kitchen there is access to the spacious and inviting terrace to the rear of the building.
Descending the internal staircase from the kitchen you reach the ground floor. Here are located the bathroom with shower, toilet and wash stand, and the second bed-room. This traditional arched room, the kamara, with double bed also has a separate entrance door.
Those who love to cook will delight in Pyrgos House. The kitchen inventory is complete and you can use the products from our nearby biological garden. In this garden we grow vegetables, fruit and herbs all year round. In addition to this, our free range chickens guarantee farm fresh eggs every morning. And of course in your kitchen you will find a bottle of our own olive oil.
Pyrgos House is open all year around. Central heating and the woodstove make your stay also in wintertime very comfortable.

9 Days Tour, exploring real Kythira, from north to south
Doing the Kythira Walking Tour, you discover all the beauties of Kythira island. The unspoilt nature, the quiet and sometimes completely abandoned villages, the surprising culture and the hospitable islanders make you feel that every day is a gift.
For the really enthusiastic walkers, we have developed a 9 day self-guided independent walking tour of more than 150 kilometres. In 7 routes you walk from hotel to hotel. The distance of a route varies from 19 to 26 kilometres. You walk 6 to 8 hours per day, including breaks and visits to highlights on the route. Day 6 is a day of rest in beautiful Mylopotamos village. On this day, you just do a short walk in the neighbourhood.
If you prefer to walk less days or to have more days of rest, just tell us. We will arrange your own Kythira Walking Tour. And, of course, it is possible to extend your holiday on Kythira with a stay in one of the accommodations.

You start in the middle of Kythira and walk towards the west coast. You will see the impressive Black Cave near Mitata and pass small villages with beautiful old churches, the mythological Tower of Agamemnon, the Panagia Orphani monastery until you will reach Mylopotamos.Day 6:
Around Mylopotamos (8,1 km)
An easy and beautiful walk towards the waterfall, the water mills and the Byzantine settlement of Kato Chora.Day 7:
From Mylopotamos to Livadi (24 km)
During this walk you will visit a restored windmill and the most important monastery of Kythira, the Panagia Myrtidiotissa. You walk along the pilgrimage route and continue towards the south of the island along the west coast and traditional villages.Day 8:
From Livadi to Kapsali (18,5 km)
A walk through the south of Kythira with churches in caves, Feloti Bay, the Chora capital with Venetian Castle, arriving in the scenic coastal village Kapsali.Day 9:

IMPORTANT NOTES
Period: you can start The Kythira Walking Tour every day of the week from March to June and from September to November.
Difficulty: rather difficult. Kythira is a hilly island, per walk the descent or ascension is 500 – 950 meters. The walking paths are generally good and clearly visible, sometimes they are more difficult. You should be in a good physical condition and it is preferable that you are experienced in doing self-guided independent walks.
Walking outfit: good and thick-soled walking shoes. Protection against sun, wind and rain.
Accommodations: pensions or small family hotels, on a bed and breakfast basis. Accommodations are subject to change.
Luggage: your luggage will be transferred from hotel to hotel.
Lunch: not included. There are shops in Agia Pelagia, Potamos and Livadi. In Mitata and Mylopotamos there are only small shops (not very well stocked).
Dinner: depending on the village, you will have dinner in a restaurant or in your accommodation. In this case, the owner will cook and you take pot luck. Dinner is not included.

Since 2003 we have lived on the island of Kythira in the village of Potamos. In 2009 we bought the ruined house next door, our dream was to transform this beautiful ruin into a unique and spacious holiday home. After 50 years in ruins Pyrgos House finally re-opened its doors in summer 2010.
Pyrgos is Greek for tower. Within living memory, inhabitants of Potamos know the traditional village house as Pyrgos because of its height and aristocratic look. Now, fully restored, we have returned the house to its former glory. The location, the views, the original outside staircase with surprising lines, and the beautiful arches make Pyrgos House a unique and striking house which has already been photographed many times.
The house is located in a narrow and quiet alley in the friendly and historic residential of Panaretianika. From the balcony on the front the view over the green hills in the direction of Logothetianika is stunning.
With a stay in Potamos you will submerge yourselves in Greek village life. Around the village square there is a bakery, a butcher shop, a small super market and some nice kafeneia and restaurants.
Every Sunday morning locals and visitors come together at the market on the village square. It is a traditional and colourful market where islanders sell their local products and have done so for hundreds of years. A visit to this market cannot be missed during your stay on Kythira.
Potamos is an ideal base for discovering the island due to its central location.
